Asset forfeiture or asset seizure is a means by which certain property may be legally confiscated by the government. But just how long has this practice been in existence? When and where did the exact theory originate? Believe it or not, this ancient method was originally used to confiscate pirate ships and whiskey stills! While the true origins are left to the real historians here, my humble attempt at demonstrating the more modern evolution of today’s forfeiture statutes is listed below (along with a touch of prose poetry and scripture for amusement purposes only):
